Solar Panels
The solar panel or collector is the main element of the solar system, its
function is to absorb solar energy and transfer it, in the
form of heat, to fluid flowing the the collector.
Types of solar panel
There are two main types of solar panel used for solar water
heating systems, they are flat plate and evacuated tube types.
In addition to these, unglazed units are used for low temperature
applications such as swimming pools and focussing collectors
are a more specialised type used for high temperature systems
to generate steam.
Of the two main types employed in solar water heating systems,
evacuated tube collectors offer higher efficiencies, typically
20% higher than flat plate types. There are however, some
significant advantages of using a flat plate design:
- Low cost - flat plate systems typically offer significant
cost savings for similar energy output
- Low Maintenance: The evacuated tubes lose their effectiveness
if the vacuum collapses so regular checks are required.
At Solaris Free Energy Ltd. we believe that maintenance should
be kept to an absolute minimum so we offer flat plate solar panels,
as standard.
Construction
Our solar panels, utilise
a selectively coated absorber, mounted in
a rigid, well insulated, aluminium housing. The collector
is glazed with special solar glass which allows maximum light to pass through to the absorber.
Mounting
Solar panels may be mounted on top of the existing roof covering
(slates, concrete tiles etc.) or set into the roof covering.
Typically, roof integrated designs are used in a new-build
situation, but they can also be incorporated into an existing
roof, although there is an additional cost involved.
